DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

Acceptable behavior is encouraged by giving positive verbal rewards that reinforce a child’s good feeling about his/her behavior.  Inappropriate behavior will be redirected into a similar acceptable behavior.  Giving the child choices encourages responsibility for the behavior.

If a child continues to demonstrate unacceptable behavior, he/she will be placed in a “thinking chair” separate from the group.  This is a thinking time, a time to regroup and calm down and get ready to return to the group. The maximum number of minutes a child will sit quietly is equal to his/her age.  Because children sometimes need a place away from the group to regain self-control, a child may be brought to the school office, not for punishment, but for a “calming down” time.  The child is later taken back to class.

Employees of BUMCELC will never spank, ridicule or degrade children as a means of correction.  Withholding food is never used as a means of discipline.

If behavior problems persist, the parent will be asked to schedule a conference to discuss what might be helpful in motivating the child to behave in an acceptable way.

BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES

All children are unique and different individuals.  Our center attempts to meet the needs of all children within a group center to the best of our ability.  However, sometimes a smaller group setting or more structured environment will better suit a child’s needs.

Our teachers help the children to make appropriate choices.  Occasionally, there will be a child in the preschool who may bite, hit, kick or otherwise harm another child or adult.  These actions along with spitting, profanity, and destruction of property are unacceptable behaviors in a preschool setting.  If these behaviors occur, a Behavioral Incident Report will be completed and the parent will be called.  After three incidents, a Parent Conference will be held to establish a corrective plan of action.  If there is no improvement, the administration reserves the right to ask that a child be removed from the center temporarily or permanently at any time the safety of other children or staff is involved.
